Each gift in this catalogue is part of a CARE development project which is empowering women, girls and their community to live, learn, earn and lead so they can overcome poverty.
Investing in women and girls is the most effective way to help communities overcome poverty. It’s a big statement, but it’s true. Here’s another amazing fact: when you help one woman out of poverty – like Arminda Vaz Moniz in Timor-Leste - she will bring at least four others with her.
She was elected as group leader for the community garden group and, although she was initially shy about leading, her experience with the veggie garden project made her more confident in her abilities. Today she helps other farmers apply new skills, manages farming equipment received from CARE and helps the group to work together.
For Arminda, the veggie garden project has meant more food for her children and more money for their education. It has also given her a chance to be an active member of her community, and she is using these skills to guide her children to become leaders too.
Arminda’s story is echoed around the globe in the 72 countries CARE works in. Time and time again, we see that women tend to transfer improvements in their own lives into the lives of their children, families and communities.
